Zakharova Says Russian Report on Bucha Was Placed Before German Foreign Minister

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said a report on the events in Bucha was placed on the table during a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. According to Zakharova, the meeting took place at the German side’s request.

Zakharova said the report supported Russia’s claim that the events in the Ukrainian town in 2022 had been deliberately misrepresented. She also alleged that Wadephul covered the report with his notebook. The German side’s response to that allegation was not available.

Although Zakharova presented the report as evidence, her conclusion about Bucha conflicts with United Nations findings. A 2022 investigation by the UN Human Rights Office documented the killing of civilians in areas of Ukraine under Russian military control. Russia has rejected accusations against its forces over the events in Bucha.

Zakharova’s comments again brought into focus the deep disagreement between Moscow and Western countries over Bucha. The claims made in the report, as well as the allegation about Wadephul’s handling of it, have not been independently verified.
