China Opposes ‘Smearing and Stigmatization’ of Confucius Institutes

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday that China opposes attempts to smear and stigmatize Confucius Institutes. He was responding to a question at a regular press conference in Beijing about US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s announcement that the institutes at American universities and campuses had been designated a threat to US national security.

Guo said educational exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States help foster mutual understanding between their peoples and benefit both sides. Such exchanges, he said, should not be obstructed or undermined.
