The International Criminal Court is scheduled to elect a new prosecutor in December 2027. The Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties has launched the selection process.
Applications will open on October 31, 2026, and close on January 31, 2027. Information on qualified candidates will be published on the Assembly’s website in February. Candidates will be assessed by the Advisory Committee on Nominations of Judges, while the Independent Oversight Mechanism will conduct background checks.
The Bureau said the timetable could be changed if necessary.
The new prosecutor will succeed Karim Khan. Deputy prosecutors have led the Office of the Prosecutor since Khan took leave in May 2025. On July 24, 2026, the Assembly voted by 82 member states to find Khan responsible for serious misconduct and a serious breach of duty and to remove him from office. He was removed by the Assembly; he did not resign.
