India Raises Concern Over Nepal’s Restriction on Bringing Goods Worth Over 100 Rupees

Kathmandu — The Indian government has expressed concern over Nepal’s recent tightening along border areas, prohibiting the import of goods valued at more than 100 rupees from India. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has said that discussions are ongoing with the Nepali government regarding the matter.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian government is aware of the recent developments in the border areas. “We have seen some reports. It is an old provision related to customs duty. Nepal is now trying to implement it,” he said at a regular press briefing.
“Our understanding is that Nepal’s step has been taken to control informal trade and smuggling,” Jaiswal said. “It is not about goods brought for personal household use from India into Nepal.”
He also referred to the statement issued by a senior official of Nepal, clarifying that measures would not be taken against goods brought for private and household use.
Meanwhile, DIG Govinda Thapaliya, Chief of Nepal Police in Madhesh Province, has issued a video message stating that individuals bringing goods for household use would not be stopped.
Ministry spokesperson Jaiswal confirmed that discussions with the Nepali government on this issue are ongoing.
