Russia-Seychelles: 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations, Talks on Expanding Tourism and Trade

Moscow — Russian President Vladimir Putin and Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie held talks in Moscow. The two leaders discussed the development of bilateral cooperation in the political, trade, economic, and humanitarian spheres, as well as international and regional issues.

During the talks, President Putin thanked the Seychelles President for accepting the invitation to visit Russia and noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Putin stated that while the volume of trade and economic ties remains modest for now, there is clear potential for growth, and the President’s visit is very timely in this regard.

Putin noted that there is excellent cooperation on international platforms, and Russia is grateful to Seychelles for supporting many Russian initiatives at the United Nations.
The number of Russian tourists visiting Seychelles is growing, and they already account for at least 15 percent of Seychelles’ total tourist inflow, Putin said. He noted that this is a good indicator, though there is certainly room to increase the number of Russian tourists traveling to the country, and thanked Seychelles for creating favorable conditions for Russian citizens. Putin added that he has invited his colleagues from the government and the Central Bank to take part in the meeting, stating that there is much to discuss, including the development of the tourism sector.

Putin expressed confidence that the unique culture of Seychelles will certainly spark the interest of the Russian public. He noted that representatives of Seychelles took part in the Russia-Africa Forum, and preparations are now underway for its third edition, expressing hope that Seychelles will participate in the third high-level forum.
Finally, President Putin congratulated the Seychelles President on the successful outcome of his election campaign and his victory in the presidential election, saying he was especially pleased to offer his personal congratulations during the visit.
