Diabetes ‘Getting Younger’: One in Every 20 Adults Affected, One-Third of Working Population Chronically Ill, Warns Russian Deputy PM

Moscow — Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova has warned that diabetes is “getting younger,” informing that the rate of the disease among working-age citizens is on the rise. Addressing the All-Russian Conference on “Medicine for Healthy Longevity,” she stated that diabetes is currently diagnosed in approximately one in every 20 adult Russians, with regions such as Kirov and Ivanovo showing rates above the national average.

According to Deputy PM Golikova, around one-third of Russia’s total working population suffers from some form of chronic non-communicable disease. She emphasized that the primary challenge lies in increasing the expected healthy life expectancy.

Doctors have warned that diabetes, particularly Type-2, associated with obesity, physical inactivity, and late diagnosis, risks turning into an epidemic. Projections estimate that by 2025, around six million Russians will be affected by diabetes, with an equal number likely to have latent forms of the disease.
