Putin Welcomes Congolese President, Extends Invitation to Third Russia–Africa Summit

Kathmandu — Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso held talks at the Kremlin in Moscow on Tuesday. Putin expressed gratitude that the Congolese President chose Russia as the destination for his first foreign visit following his re-election.

“As we were walking here, Mr President and I recalled that the first bilateral treaty was signed back in 1981. Since that time, Russia — then the USSR — and the Congo have enjoyed friendly, full-fledged and good relations,” Putin said. Noting that the Congo’s stable domestic political situation creates good prospects for business, he highlighted opportunities for cooperation in geological exploration, energy, logistics, agriculture and several other areas.

Putin informed that 8,000 Congolese specialists have been trained in Russia so far, with 850 young people currently pursuing their studies. “We continue to work actively on the international stage and at international platforms. We are grateful to you for your active participation in the Russia–Africa Summits. We are now preparing the Third Summit for this autumn. I count on your personal participation and invite you to Moscow,” Putin said.

A joint action plan for the coming years in the economic sphere is set to be signed during the visit. The Congolese President’s programme also includes a visit to the Federation Council and a trip to St Petersburg.
