Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Strikes Yushu City in China, Four Settlements Within Five Kilometres Affected

Yushu. A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck Yushu City under the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, China, on Thursday morning. According to the official measurement of the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the earthquake occurred at 10:37 a.m. on Thursday.

The epicentre was located at 33.05 degrees north latitude and 96.16 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 10 kilometres. The villages within five kilometres of the epicentre include Dar Chang Mado, Pal Lung Mada, Phra Rong Gag and Khra La Sum Mado. There is no township within 20 kilometres, while Rongpo Township, Gyasang Township, Raksul Todma Township, Hasul Township and Chaphukthang Township lie within 50 kilometres.

The epicentre was 80 kilometres from Yushu City, 82 kilometres from Zhidoi County, 96 kilometres from Tridu County, 99 kilometres from Nangqen County, 102 kilometres from Drido County, 80 kilometres from Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and 711 kilometres from Lhasa City. The average elevation within five kilometres of the epicentre is 4,433 metres above sea level.

According to the rapid report list of the CENC, 51 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or above have occurred within 200 kilometres of the epicentre over the past five years. Among them, the strongest was a magnitude 5.8 earthquake that struck Madoi County of Golog Prefecture in Qinghai Province on August 13, 2021. That earthquake occurred 213 kilometres from the epicentre of the latest tremor.

The CENC map uses a five-level colour indicator based on earthquake intensity.
