Russia and the Philippines Mark 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Kathmandu. Russia and the Philippines have marked 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations. Formal diplomatic ties between the then Soviet Union and the Republic of the Philippines were established on June 2, 1976.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established during the visit of then Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. to Moscow. Despite the complex international environment of the Cold War, Marcos Sr. pursued an independent foreign policy, making the establishment of relations historically significant.

Over the past five decades, Russia–Philippines relations have stood the test of time. Friendship and cooperation between the two countries have continued to develop on the basis of mutual respect, pragmatism and shared interests.

In recent years, Moscow and Manila have been expanding cooperation across various fields. Both countries have been advancing political dialogue, economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and coordination on multilateral platforms, building on their accumulated experience in bilateral relations.

Russia and the Philippines have also continued to cooperate in various international forums. In particular, dialogue and coordination between the two sides have become more effective through Russia–ASEAN mechanisms.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Russia extended warm greetings to its Philippine colleagues, friends and the people of the Philippines. Russia recalled the half-century-long relationship as an important foundation of friendship, respect and practical cooperation between the two countries and their peoples.

The 50-year journey of Russia–Philippines relations is viewed as a symbol of diplomatic continuity, mutual trust and cooperation at the regional and international levels.
