The Legacy of Russia-Indonesia Friendship: President Soekarno’s 125th Birth Anniversary

An article by Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov and Diponegoro University lecturer Aslama Nanda Rizal, published in Rakyat Merdeka on June 5, 2026, commemorates the 125th anniversary of the birth of Indonesia’s first President Soekarno and highlights his contributions to Russia-Indonesia relations.

On June 6, 2026, Indonesia commemorates the 125th anniversary of the birth of Soekarno, the Proclaimer of Indonesia’s Independence, who is remembered as a distinguished statesman that strongly supported and consistently advanced Russia-Indonesia relations. In Russia, he is remembered as a true friend who made frequent visits to the Soviet Union and promoted practical cooperation in political, economic, defense, and humanitarian fields.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Moscow provided substantial support to Jakarta during its struggle against colonialism and in the difficult early years following independence. The Soviet Union provided Indonesia with extensive military and military-technical assistance, including arms and equipment, which helped strengthen the country’s defense capabilities and safeguard the sovereignty of the newly established republic.

President Soekarno visited the Soviet Union on four occasions — in 1956, 1959, 1961, and 1964. During his visit to Moscow in 1961, he awarded the Star of Mahaputera to Yuri Gagarin, the world’s first cosmonaut, in recognition of his historic achievement in space exploration. Since then, the name Yuri has become extremely popular in Indonesia.

Today, Russia and Indonesia continue to strengthen cooperation in politics, trade, energy, education, science, culture, and humanitarian affairs. This cooperation is rooted in principles established during President Soekarno’s era: respect for sovereignty, equality, mutual benefit, and an independent approach to international affairs.

The article expresses confidence that the Russia-Indonesia Strategic Partnership will continue to develop and acquire increasingly substantive practical content for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.
