Nepal, Russia Discuss Ways to Deepen Political and Economic Cooperation

Kathmandu — Russian Ambassador to Nepal Aleksei V. Surovtsev paid a courtesy call on Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav at the Office of the Vice President in Lainchaur, Kathmandu, where the two sides discussed ways to further strengthen Nepal–Russia relations. Public reports identify the meeting date as June 17, 2026; the “May 17” date in the supplied text appears inconsistent with available public reports.
During the meeting, Vice President Yadav expressed satisfaction over the long-standing friendly relations between Nepal and Russia, noting that diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in 1956. He said Nepal values the relationship on the basis of mutual respect, understanding and friendship.
The discussion focused on expanding political and economic dialogue between Nepal and Russia. Ambassador Surovtsev reaffirmed Russia’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Nepal in areas including hydropower, agriculture, medicine and physical infrastructure.
Vice President Yadav also requested the ambassador to convey congratulations and best wishes to the Russian people on the occasion of Russia Day, the national day of the Russian Federation, which is celebrated on June 12.
According to public reports, the Russian side also indicated readiness to consider cooperation in reviving and modernizing some of Nepal’s closed state-owned industries, including the Birgunj Sugar Factory and Janakpur Cigarette Factory, if Nepal submits a formal request with necessary details.
