Russia and Thailand Seek Wider Partnership at Kazan Talks

Kazan — Russian President Vladimir Putin and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul held talks on the sidelines of the Russia–ASEAN Summit in Kazan, with both sides highlighting expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, transport, agriculture, culture and tourism.

President Putin described Thailand as a key member of ASEAN and one of the association’s founding states. He thanked the King of Thailand for his greetings on Russia Day and also expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Anutin for attending celebrations hosted by the Russian Embassy.

The meeting took place as Russia and Thailand prepare to mark the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year. Diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in 1897, giving the relationship a long historical foundation.

Putin said cooperation between Russia and Thailand is developing constructively across political, economic and humanitarian fields. He noted that bilateral trade remains stable and continues to grow. According to the Russian side, trade turnover increased by 2.3 percent in 2025, reaching 1.72 billion US dollars. In the first three months of 2026, bilateral trade grew by 26 percent.

Energy, transport, logistics, agriculture and investment were identified as areas with strong potential for mutually beneficial cooperation. Putin said the Mixed Commission on Bilateral Cooperation could play a more active role in advancing work in these sectors.

Cultural and humanitarian exchanges were also discussed. The 2024–2025 Cross Years of Cultural Exchanges and Tourism between Russia and Thailand were described as successful. Major events included performances by the Bolshoi Theatre in Bangkok and the Royal Symphony Orchestra in Russia.

The Russian cultural program “Russian Seasons” was also highlighted as an important part of cultural cooperation. Its opening ceremony was held in Bangkok in February, further strengthening people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Tourism remains one of the most dynamic areas of Russia–Thailand relations. Putin said nearly 2 million Russian citizens visited Thailand in 2025. Since the beginning of 2026, the number has already reached around 850,000, underlining Thailand’s continued popularity among Russian travelers.

The Kazan meeting came as Russia seeks to deepen its engagement with ASEAN countries through trade, energy, transport, agriculture, technology, tourism and multilateral dialogue. Thailand, as one of ASEAN’s founding members, holds an important place in that regional framework.

For Thailand, cooperation with Russia offers opportunities to diversify economic and tourism partnerships while maintaining active engagement with major global and regional actors. The steady increase in trade and tourism indicates that both countries see practical value in strengthening bilateral ties.

The central message of the meeting was that Russia and Thailand intend to build on their long diplomatic history and move toward broader, more practical cooperation. With trade growing, tourism expanding and cultural exchanges continuing, both sides appear focused on turning historical relations into a stronger economic and humanitarian partnership.
