Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal has said that voters and the general public are closely observing the work, conduct and style of lawmakers through various platforms. He urged all members of parliament to become more responsible toward their duties.
Inaugurating an orientation program organized by the Federal Parliament Secretariat for members of the House of Representatives, Speaker Aryal said lawmakers should learn from good parliamentary practices of the past and become more study oriented and technology friendly in the process of lawmaking.
According to Speaker Aryal, the orientation program was organized to help lawmakers better understand parliamentary methods and procedures and to make their work more effective.
“There are many new members in the House of Representatives at present. This program has been organized to further familiarize them with parliamentary methods and procedures and to make the work of lawmakers more effective,” Speaker Aryal said. “I believe this learning process will be useful in helping lawmakers become more capable in parliamentary procedure and practice.”
He said that once elected by the people, a lawmaker’s life moves from the private sphere into public life. For that reason, he stressed that lawmakers must act with greater responsibility and awareness.
Speaker Aryal also said the role of lawmakers is not limited to attending parliamentary meetings. Their responsibilities include lawmaking, monitoring the work of the government, raising issues of public concern, participating in policy discussions and presenting the voice of the people in an institutional manner.
Speaking at the program, Secretary General of the Federal Parliament Secretariat Padya Prasad Pandey welcomed the participants and said the two day orientation program had been organized to provide lawmakers with additional knowledge about parliamentary procedure, methods and practices.
According to Pandey, the orientation will cover parliamentary procedure, conduct of meetings, the bill drafting and lawmaking process, the role and dignity of lawmakers, parliamentary practices and coordination with the secretariat.
The Federal Parliament Secretariat organized the orientation program on parliamentary procedure and practice for members of the House of Representatives at the Parliament Building premises in Singha Durbar on Monday and Tuesday.
The program is expected to make both new and experienced lawmakers more aware of parliamentary dignity, procedural efficiency and public accountability.
