Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Saturday, discussing the Ukraine conflict, the international situation and possible areas of cooperation between Russia and the United States, according to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.

Putin congratulated Trump and the American people as the United States marked the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Ushakov said the call was the fourth conversation between the two presidents this year. He described it as a business-focused and constructive exchange that went beyond the formal delivery of Independence Day greetings.

The two leaders held a frank discussion on pressing bilateral and international issues, he added.

During the conversation, Putin briefed Trump on what Moscow described as the latest battlefield situation along the line of contact in Ukraine.

According to Ushakov, Putin said Russian forces were advancing across different sections of the front. The Russian side also argued that some European countries had formed an inaccurate assessment of the overall military dynamics and conditions on the ground.

As fighting continues and independent access to many frontline areas remains restricted, battlefield claims made by the parties cannot be fully verified.

The two presidents also emphasised the importance of maintaining regular communication on military, political and economic issues, according to the Kremlin.

Ushakov said Russia and the United States had broad prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation in these areas.

Trump reportedly stated that an early resolution of the Ukraine conflict would create the necessary conditions for developing economic and other forms of cooperation between the two countries.

Despite continuing disagreements between Moscow and Washington over Ukraine, strategic security and economic relations, high-level contacts have continued in recent months.

Russia has presented regular presidential communication as an important mechanism for stabilising bilateral relations and managing wider international tensions.
