The elder brother of Ganesh Nepali, who died while undergoing treatment after a self-immolation attempt, has said that the government did not fall short in providing medical care.
Speaking with journalist Diwakar Sah, he said the government had made all necessary efforts to save Ganesh’s life.
When Sah asked whether he believed the government had failed in any aspect of the treatment, Ganesh’s brother replied that he did not feel there had been any such failure.
He said, “I do not think the government fell short anywhere. A team was also deployed from the Prime Minister’s Office, and the home minister personally visited. Preparations had even been made to take my brother to Delhi for further treatment, but he could not be saved.”
The role of the government, Kathmandu Metropolitan City and other relevant authorities has been widely debated by political parties, activists and social media users since Ganesh’s death. The family’s statement has now presented a different perspective on the government’s efforts during his treatment.
During the interview, Sah said the government appeared to have taken the necessary steps for treatment. He also expressed concern that some journalists and activists had used the incident for political purposes and to attract views on social media.
He said, “It was painful to see some journalists and activists politicising the death and using the incident for views. I am also a journalist.”
According to Sah, some journalists had allegedly encouraged Ganesh’s brother to speak against the government. Responding to the claim, Ganesh’s brother said that some individuals had indeed attempted to provoke him.
He said, “Some journalists tried to incite me, but I had not given an interview to anyone.”
At a time when different claims continue to emerge regarding Ganesh Nepali’s death, the family’s latest statement has opened a new debate over the treatment arrangements and the alleged political use of the incident.
