Rain Expected Across Much of Nepal Today; Authorities Urge Caution Over Flood and Landslide Risks

Monsoon conditions continue to affect Nepal, with the monsoon trough currently positioned near its normal location, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division.

At present, the country’s Himalayan and hilly regions are generally cloudy. The Tarai areas of Madhes and Koshi provinces are partly cloudy, while the Tarai regions of Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces are mostly clear.

Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is currently occurring at some places in Koshi, Gandaki, Bagmati and Karnali provinces, the department said.

During the daytime, Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as the Himalayan and hilly areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, are expected to remain generally cloudy. The Tarai regions of Madhes and Sudurpaschim provinces are likely to be partly cloudy.

Moderate rain or snowfall is possible at some places in the Himalayan and hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, and at a few places in the Himalayan and hilly areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Moderate rainfall is also possible at a few places in Madhes Province and the Tarai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as at one or two places in the Tarai region of Sudurpaschim Province.

Tonight, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy across the country. Some places in the Himalayan and hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as parts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, may receive moderate rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is also possible at some places in the Tarai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, and at one or two places in Madhes Province.

The department has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious, warning that heavy rainfall could increase the risk of debris flows, floods, landslides and soil erosion.

It also cautioned that adverse weather conditions could affect daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, mountaineering, and road and air transportation, and advised the public to follow updated weather information and take necessary precautions.
