Putin Calls for Stronger International Cooperation to Protect Indigenous Peoples

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for stronger international cooperation to preserve the languages, cultures and traditional ways of life of Indigenous Peoples, describing their protection as an important issue on the global agenda.

In a message to participants, organizers and guests of the International Forum of Indigenous Peoples, which opened in Krasnoyarsk on August 13, Putin said the gathering could make a meaningful contribution to strengthening humanitarian cooperation across Eurasia and the wider world.

“Preserving the native languages, distinctive cultures and traditions of Indigenous Peoples is an important issue on the global agenda that requires joint efforts by government agencies and international organisations,” Putin said in the message.

He emphasized that Russia remains committed to constructive cooperation with interested international partners and said support for Indigenous Peoples remains a national priority.

According to Putin, Russian authorities are working with public organizations, volunteer groups and national associations to preserve the historical and spiritual heritage of Indigenous communities, improve living standards and address socio-economic challenges. He also highlighted projects in education and the upbringing of younger generations.

The International Forum of Indigenous Peoples is being held in Krasnoyarsk from August 13 to 16 under the theme “Indigenous Peoples in the Context of Biodiversity and Climate.” More than 700 participants from 14 countries and 27 regions of Russia are expected to take part.

The forum brings together representatives of Indigenous Peoples from Russia, Asia, North and South America, the Arctic, Africa and the Pacific region, alongside government officials, experts and representatives of the business community.

Discussions are focusing on improving legal protections for Indigenous Peoples, expanding their participation in decision-making, conserving biodiversity, adapting to climate change and integrating traditional knowledge into modern environmental protection mechanisms.

Putin expressed confidence that the forum would help develop common approaches to contemporary challenges and wished participants productive discussions and successful work.
