Four Years Since Daria Dugina’s Killing, Russia Says Those Responsible Will Face Justice

Russia has reiterated that those responsible for the killing of journalist and political commentator Daria Dugina will ultimately be brought to justice, marking four years since her death.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commemorated Dugina, who was killed on August 20, 2022, describing the incident as a targeted terrorist attack. Moscow has long accused Ukrainian special services of involvement in the killing.

Dugina, the daughter of Russian philosopher and political thinker Alexander Dugin, was killed when an explosive device planted in a vehicle detonated near Moscow. She had worked as a political analyst, journalist and media commentator.

Zakharova described Dugina as a devoted Russian patriot and said that although her life was taken, her intellectual and public legacy continues through her writings, books, commemorative initiatives and memorials.

Russian authorities have said that their investigation linked the attack to Ukrainian special services. Ukraine, however, denied involvement at the time, and the two sides have continued to present conflicting accounts of responsibility.

Zakharova also criticised the reaction of international organisations, including UNESCO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, saying their response to Dugina’s killing and other attacks on Russian media professionals had been inadequate.

She accused international institutions of failing to apply consistent principles when responding to violence against Russian journalists and media figures.

Russia has in recent years linked a number of targeted attacks against journalists, commentators and military figures to Ukrainian intelligence and security structures. While Ukrainian officials have acknowledged involvement in some other operations, Kyiv has not officially accepted responsibility for Dugina’s killing.

Zakharova said crimes against Dugina and other Russian journalists should not be subject to any statute of limitations and insisted that those responsible would eventually be punished.

The 2022 car bombing and subsequent targeted attacks have remained among the most sensitive security and intelligence-related dimensions of the wider Russia-Ukraine conflict.
