Bilibili Steps Up Global Expansion, Seeks to Attract International Creators

Dragon Media News Desk

Bilibili, one of China’s leading video and digital community platforms, is accelerating its international expansion as it seeks to attract creators and younger audiences from around the world.

The company has relaunched its previously discontinued international app and is also working on an English-language website. Its plans to expand local teams in Japan, the United States, Europe and other major markets indicate that Bilibili is seeking to establish a long-term presence beyond China.

Bilibili’s main Chinese platform has around 376 million monthly active users. Having built a particularly strong following among younger generations, the company is now seeking to adapt its community-centred model for international markets.

The platform is also working to attract prominent international content creators. Foreign creators, including globally known YouTuber MrBeast, have been encouraged to publish content on Bilibili’s Chinese platform.

The relaunched international app has also simplified identity verification requirements for overseas users. Previously, some foreign users of the main Chinese platform were required to provide identification documents.

Bilibili is reportedly developing a sponsored-content marketplace designed to connect creators with international brands. The company is seeking to position itself as a platform where creators can generate income while reaching a young, educated and relatively affluent user base.

As part of its international expansion, the company is preparing to recruit personnel for community management and related roles in cities including Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Istanbul and Tokyo.

Bilibili is also preparing to strengthen its artificial intelligence-based content moderation capabilities in Singapore. Managing content in accordance with different legal systems, languages and cultural environments is expected to become an important part of its global strategy.

As it expands internationally, Bilibili will face competition from established global video platforms such as YouTube. However, its large domestic user base, strong appeal among younger audiences and distinctive ecosystem centred on animation, gaming and creator-driven content could give it a differentiated position in the global market.

At the same time, compliance with national content regulations, protection of user data, local regulatory requirements and cultural adaptation will remain major challenges.

Overall, Bilibili’s latest moves suggest more than a simple expansion of its app. They point to a broader strategic transition in which one of China’s most influential digital communities is seeking a place in the global market for creators, multilingual audiences and online content.
