Bumper Barley Harvest on High-Altitude Terraced Fields in Lhorong, Xizang

Farmers in Lhorong County of Chamdo City in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region are busy harvesting barley as the crop ripens across the region’s high-altitude terraced fields.

On August 22, villagers in Baitho Village of Xinrong Township took advantage of favorable farming conditions to intensify barley harvesting. Ripened barley has turned the mountain terraces golden, bringing a lively harvest atmosphere to the village.

Although the mountain roads leading to Baitho Village are winding and challenging, its extensive terraced fields form a distinctive agricultural landscape on the plateau. Despite the difficult terrain, local communities have cultivated barley on these terraces for generations.

Barley is one of the principal grain crops adapted to the distinctive soil, altitude and ecological conditions of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Its ability to grow under harsh climatic conditions and at high elevations has made it an important component of food security in plateau regions.

Barley is also deeply connected with the everyday life and food culture of Tibetan communities. A variety of traditional foods are made from the grain, making barley cultivation not only an agricultural activity but also an important part of local traditions, culture and way of life.

This year’s strong harvest has once again brought activity and optimism to the high-altitude terraced fields of Lhorong as farmers work to bring in the barley crop.
