Snow Falls on Dagu Glacier in August, Creating a Two-Season Landscape on One Mountain

Snow fell on Dagu Glacier in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on August 18, covering the mountain summit at an elevation of 4,860 meters above sea level. The snowfall is considered one of the earliest recorded in the area in recent years.

Fresh snow blanketed viewing platforms, rocks and safety railings in the upper reaches of the glacier. Tourists were seen walking through the falling snow and enjoying the unusual high-altitude winter scenery in the middle of summer.

Because of the plateau’s geographical and climatic conditions, temperatures at Dagu Glacier can fall sharply even in August. This year’s early snowfall covered the upper section of the glacier while summer conditions remained visible at lower elevations.

The result was a striking landscape showing two different seasons on the same mountain. Lush green forests remained across the lower slopes, while the summit was covered in white snow.

The contrast between summer greenery and snow-covered peaks offered visitors a distinctive view of western Sichuan’s high-altitude environment and natural beauty.

Located on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, Dagu Glacier is a well-known high-mountain tourist destination. Its viewing area at an elevation of 4,860 meters attracts visitors with its glaciers, snow-covered peaks and dramatic plateau scenery.
