China’s EV Charging Points Surpass 23.68 Million

China’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure continued to expand rapidly, with the total number of charging points reaching 23.68 million by the end of July 2026.

According to the National Energy Administration, the figure was up 41.9 percent year on year.

Of the total, public charging facilities reached 5.099 million, an increase of 21.3 percent from a year earlier. Private charging points expanded much faster, rising 48.8 percent to 18.58 million.

The rapid growth of charging infrastructure has come alongside another surge in sales of new-energy vehicles, or NEVs.

In July, China produced more than 1.57 million NEVs and sold more than 1.56 million, representing year-on-year increases of 26.8 percent and 23.7 percent, respectively.

NEVs accounted for more than 60 percent of all new vehicle sales in China during July for the first time, highlighting the accelerating shift away from conventional internal-combustion vehicles in the world’s largest automobile market.

China is also expanding its charging network to keep pace with future demand. Under a three-year action plan announced in October 2025, the country aims to establish 28 million charging facilities nationwide by the end of 2027, with public charging capacity exceeding 300 million kilowatts.

The network is expected to support more than 80 million electric vehicles.

China has also set a target of increasing the share of NEVs in the country’s total vehicle fleet to around 30 percent by 2030.

The simultaneous expansion of charging infrastructure, vehicle production and sales reflects China’s broader transition toward an increasingly electrified transport system and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.
