Russia and Ukraine Exchange 10 POWs Each in Belarus

Russia and Ukraine exchanged 10 prisoners of war each in Gomel, Belarus, on August 26.

According to Russia’s High Commissioner for Human Rights Yana Lantratova, Ukraine returned 10 Russian servicemen in exchange for 10 Ukrainian POWs who had been repatriated by Russia on August 24.

Lantratova said it is important that every Russian serviceman held in captivity knows that he has not been forgotten, that his family is waiting for him, and that efforts to secure his return are continuing.

She thanked all those involved in the humanitarian operation and expressed particular appreciation to President Vladimir Putin, the Russian Defence Ministry and other relevant agencies for their role in securing the servicemen’s return.

Lantratova also thanked Belarus for facilitating the exchange and assisting in the return of the Russian personnel.

The latest exchange is another indication that humanitarian channels between Russia and Ukraine remain operational despite the continuing conflict. Although the number involved was relatively small, such exchanges remain significant for the repatriation of prisoners and the reunification of servicemen with their families.
