Bujia Glacier in Xizang Sets New Guinness World Record

A glacier on Bujia Snow Mountain in Sog County, Nagqu City, China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records for having the greatest vertical difference among hanging glaciers.

The Guinness World Records certificate was presented to Sog County during the recent Changtang Zhumo Music Festival, adding a new internationally recognized ecological and cultural tourism attraction to northern Xizang.

The Bujia Snow Mountain scenic area is located in Rongpo Town of Sog County. Situated at an average elevation of more than 4,500 meters, the area lies in the central Changtang region and features extensive valley landscapes, glaciers and rare areas of relatively undisturbed high-altitude forest.

The glacier’s new world-record recognition highlights the exceptional geography of the Bujia Snow Mountain area and is expected to strengthen its international profile as a destination for ecological, scientific and cultural tourism.

Beyond tourism, the region is also regarded as an important natural site for studying climate change and high-altitude ecosystems in northern Xizang. Its glaciers, mountain landscapes, vegetation and distinctive plateau environment provide valuable conditions for observing environmental changes in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.

Local authorities have emphasized an approach that combines ecological conservation with sustainable development. The area is being promoted as an example of putting into practice the principle that a healthy natural environment is itself a valuable economic and social asset.

The Guinness recognition is therefore significant not only as a world record. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen protection of fragile Himalayan and plateau ecosystems, promote local culture, expand responsible tourism and support sustainable economic development in Sog County and the wider Nagqu region.
