Former Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa Dies at 89

Tung Chee-hwa, former chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and former vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has died at the age of 89.

He died of illness in Hong Kong at 9:57 p.m. on Tuesday.

Tung is remembered as an important contributor to the implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle. He was also described as a renowned patriot, an outstanding social activist and a close friend of the Communist Party of China.

He served as vice chairman of the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th National Committees of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Tung also served as the first- and second-term chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, making him one of the central political figures in the early years of Hong Kong following its return to China.
