Russia May Make Unified State Exam More Difficult if Students Consistently Achieve High Scores

Russia could make its Unified State Exam, known as the EGE, more difficult if graduating students consistently demonstrate high levels of achievement, Russian presidential aide Andrei Fursenko has said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the International Youth Festival, Fursenko said the level of difficulty could be adjusted if students continue to achieve consistently strong results in the examination.

The EGE is a key component of Russia’s national education assessment system for students completing secondary school. Its results are used both to certify completion of secondary education and as an important part of the university admission process.

Fursenko’s remarks indicate that examination standards could be adjusted in line with changes in student performance. If consistently high scores become widespread, increasing the difficulty of the examination could become part of efforts to maintain appropriate assessment standards and ensure that the system continues to differentiate levels of academic achievement.
