China Hands Over Tunnel Rescue Equipment to Nepal, Pledges Further Support for Post-Disaster Reconstruction

China has formally handed over specialized tunnel rescue equipment to the Government of Nepal following its deployment during search and rescue operations after the devastating floods and landslides. Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming and Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun signed the handover certificate for the equipment provided by the People’s Republic of China.
During the ceremony, Minister Pun expressed appreciation for the assistance extended by the Chinese government and people during Nepal’s response to the catastrophic disaster. He also acknowledged the contribution of Chinese tunnel rescue experts who worked alongside Nepali teams in complex rescue operations and emphasized the importance of further strengthening Nepal-China cooperation in disaster prevention, emergency response and post-disaster reconstruction.
Ambassador Zhang thanked Nepali authorities for their coordination and support for the Chinese tunnel rescue specialists during their deployment. He reaffirmed that China would continue to stand with Nepal in overcoming the consequences of the disaster and pledged further assistance for emergency response as well as reconstruction and recovery efforts.
At the request of the Government of Nepal, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management had earlier dispatched specialized tunnel rescue experts to Nepal. The Chinese specialists were deployed in coordination with Nepali teams at affected hydropower projects and tunnel sites where search and rescue operations involved particularly difficult technical conditions. Specialized equipment required for such operations was also brought to Nepal.
China had also transported emergency relief supplies to Kathmandu aboard Y-20 heavy transport aircraft of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force. The assistance included tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food supplies, first-aid materials and other emergency necessities. Technical and humanitarian assistance continued as rescue and relief operations expanded in disaster-affected areas.
The formal transfer of the tunnel rescue equipment carries significance beyond the immediate emergency operation. Retaining specialized equipment in Nepal could contribute to strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to future accidents and emergencies involving tunnels, hydropower facilities and other complex infrastructure.
The cooperation developed during the recent disaster has added a practical humanitarian dimension to Nepal-China relations. Coordination in search and rescue, emergency relief, technical assistance and post-disaster reconstruction reflects the broader partnership between the two neighboring countries at a time when Nepal faces the demanding task of recovery and rebuilding.
