Prosperity Through Lingzhi Cultivation in Xizang

Nyima, a resident of Milin City in Nyingchi, southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, has transformed a small venture that began with collecting wild Lingzhi mushrooms into a commercial farming operation that now contributes to local employment and rural incomes.

In 2008, the then Milin County registered Nyima’s family as a low income household and provided him with a 150,000 yuan loan to support his livelihood. He began by collecting wild white fleshed Lingzhi, scientifically known as Ganoderma leucocontextum, before exploring methods for artificial cultivation.

After years of experimentation and technical development, Nyima established a spawn production workshop and a simulated wild cultivation base in 2012. His farm now covers more than 1,000 mu, or approximately 66.7 hectares, including Lingzhi cultivation areas and greenhouses.

In 2025, the farm recorded an output value of 9.2 million yuan, equivalent to approximately 1.37 million U.S. dollars. The business has also created 35 stable jobs and employed four local college graduates.

Nyima has extended the benefits of the enterprise to surrounding communities by providing villagers with free mushroom spawn bags and technical guidance, helping local farmers explore Lingzhi cultivation as an additional source of income.

His experience illustrates how financial support, local resources, agricultural technology and entrepreneurship can be combined to expand production, create employment and support rural economic development.
