Russia and Belize Seek to Expand Political Dialogue and Cooperation

Belmopan: Russian Ambassador to Belize Nikolay Sofinskiy has held separate meetings with Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Francis Fonseca, focusing on bilateral relations and opportunities for broader cooperation.

Sofinskiy, Russia’s non resident ambassador to Belize, held the meetings on September 18 while participating in Diplomatic Week organized in connection with the 45th anniversary of Belize’s independence. The talks reviewed bilateral relations as Russia and Belize mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year, with both sides discussing ways to strengthen political dialogue and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The meetings also included an exchange of views on current international and regional issues. During his meeting with Fonseca, Sofinskiy presented a personal congratulatory message from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov marking Belize’s independence anniversary. According to the Russian side, Lavrov emphasized the importance Moscow attaches to relations based on friendship and mutual respect and expressed Russia’s commitment to further developing constructive political dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation.

During his visit, Sofinskiy also held other official and business contacts in Belize. The two countries have identified areas including tourism, trade, investment and education as potential fields for expanding practical cooperation.

As Russia and Belize mark 35 years of diplomatic relations, the latest contacts reflect continuing efforts to maintain political engagement while exploring additional areas of practical bilateral cooperation.
