A prisoner attacked prison guards aboard a train in Kabardino-Balkaria, in Russia’s North Caucasus, killing one convoy officer and injuring three others. The attacker was shot dead by other guards, according to Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service.
The Investigative Committee said inmates were being transported on the Vladikavkaz–Adler train under guard. Near Murtazovo station, a prisoner attacked an officer while being escorted to the restroom, seized his service weapon and fired at the escort team, the penitentiary service said. A law enforcement source told TASS that the prisoner had previously been convicted of serious crimes.
One of the wounded officers is in serious condition, while the other two are in moderate condition, a law enforcement source said. No civilians were injured. The penitentiary service rejected reports of a riot on the train. The scene is under control, and investigators and forensic experts are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case on suspicion of stealing a firearm, disrupting the operations of a correctional facility through life-threatening violence, and attempting to take the life of a law enforcement officer. The Federal Penitentiary Service has launched an internal inquiry. The Kabardino-Balkaria Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the investigation. The service said it would provide assistance to the deceased officer’s family and to all three injured guards.
