From US-Iran Talks to the Ukraine War: Major Global Developments Surface Simultaneously

Kathmandu. Issues ranging from US-Iran tensions, the Ukraine war, security challenges around nuclear facilities, European politics, and public safety incidents to the Ebola outbreak in Africa have heightened international concern.

According to reports citing the Iranian news agency Fars, the United States has put forward five conditions to advance the dispute resolution process with Iran. The conditions reportedly include not making any payment for damages caused by US attacks, transferring 400 kilograms of enriched uranium from Iran to the US, allowing only one active nuclear facility to remain in Iran, not releasing even 25 percent of Iran’s frozen assets, and linking a ceasefire on all fronts to the negotiations. The claims made by Fars have also been cited by Russian and regional media outlets.

Meanwhile, in another development related to the Ukraine war, the Russian side has claimed that Ukrainian armed forces shelled the transport workshop area of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and attacked the ‘Raduga’ substation with a drone. As the Zaporizhzhia plant is one of Europe’s most sensitive nuclear infrastructure facilities, military activity in its vicinity has been raising international security concerns.

Elsewhere, a fire broke out near the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, following a drone strike. According to international media, the drone impacted a generator area outside the plant’s inner security perimeter. No casualties were reported, and radiation levels were said to be normal.

In the Russian capital Moscow, the road surface of the North-Eastern Expressway (SVH) sagged in some places following a fire in the Amurskaya Street area. After the fire, local authorities have become alert regarding traffic management and structural safety.

In Pyatigorsk, Russia, the director of a petrol pump network where an explosion occurred has been arrested. An investigation is reportedly underway into the cause of the explosion, compliance with safety standards, and the operator’s responsibility.

In France, the possibility of an arrest warrant being issued against American billionaire Elon Musk has made headlines. The matter drew international attention after Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau made a statement. However, the basis on which formal legal proceedings may move forward remains unclear as yet.

An incident has also come to light at the world-renowned Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, where a visitor sat on the grand imperial throne in the Georgievsky Hall and attempted to provoke a confrontation. The museum administration is reported to have taken the incident seriously, stating that rules regarding respect for cultural heritage and security were violated.

In Finland, the air force scrambled fighter jets following recent drone incidents. European countries have been increasing air security vigilance due to drone activity observed in border and sensitive areas.

In Africa, reports indicate that the death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 88. International health agencies have shown concern and are working to intensify infection control, deployment of health workers, surveillance, and vaccination campaigns.

A warning has also emerged that the European Union’s plan to cut steel imports by half could deliver a major economic blow to Ukraine. According to reports citing the Financial Times, if such a policy is implemented, Ukraine stands to lose up to approximately one billion euros in revenue.

All these developments signal deepening instability and competition in the fields of global politics, energy security, nuclear infrastructure, war, trade, and public health. In particular, US-Iran tensions, the Ukraine war, and incidents around nuclear facilities indicate that international diplomacy is set to become even more complex in the days ahead.
