Undav’s Brace Sends Germany into Knockout Stage

Toronto. Substitute Deniz Undav scored twice as four-time world champion Germany came from behind to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 and secure a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Germany fell behind in its second group-stage match but produced a strong comeback to claim an important victory. Côte d’Ivoire captain Franck Kessié gave the African side the lead in the first half, leaving Germany searching for an equalizer for much of the match.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann introduced players from the bench in the second half, and the move changed the rhythm of the game. In the 68th minute, Undav converted a fine cross from Nadiem Amiri to bring Germany level at 1-1.

As the match appeared to be heading toward a draw, Undav struck again in the fourth minute of stoppage time. His decisive goal gave Germany a 2-1 win and secured the team’s place in the Round of 32 before its final group match.

For Côte d’Ivoire, the defeat was painful. The team created several chances in the second half but failed to make them count. However, its hopes of reaching the knockout stage remain alive, as it will face Curaçao in the final group match.

Germany had earlier opened its campaign with a commanding 7-1 victory over Curaçao. In that match, Undav also came off the bench, scored once and created two goal-scoring opportunities.

With impressive performances in two consecutive matches, Undav has established himself as an important “super sub” for Germany. His decisive impact has put the German side in a strong position in the group stage.
