Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi left for Washington on Monday leading a government and economic delegation, with the aim of attracting US investment in Iraq’s energy sector. The visit marks his first overseas trip since assuming office.
In a post on X, al-Zaidi said the objectives of the visit were to attract investment, transfer expertise and technology, diversify the economy and create employment opportunities.
He said the visit was also intended to accelerate Iraq’s development and strengthen the country’s position as a trusted partner and an active contributor to regional stability and prosperity.
Iraqi government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi said Iraq and the United States were expected to sign several memoranda of understanding in the oil and gas sectors during the visit.
The proposed agreements are expected to encourage greater participation by American companies in Iraq’s energy industry.
Baghdad has been seeking international investment to increase oil production, modernise energy infrastructure and develop alternative export routes. As Iraq remains heavily dependent on oil exports for government revenue, expanding production capacity and strengthening its export system remain major national priorities.
Al-Zaidi’s visit comes amid heightened regional tensions following direct strikes and retaliatory attacks between the United States and Iran.
Iraq faces the challenge of maintaining relations with both countries while preventing its territory from becoming a centre of regional confrontation and continuing to prioritise its economic interests.
