Mongolia Warns of Bubonic Plague Risk Amid Illegal Marmot Hunting

Mongolia’s National Center for Zoonotic Diseases has warned of an increased risk of bubonic plague during the summer season, urging the public to avoid hunting marmots, consuming their meat or coming into contact with potentially infected wildlife.

Although marmot hunting is prohibited by law in Mongolia, illegal hunting continues because the animal’s meat is still regarded as a traditional delicacy by some communities.

Health authorities said the risk of infection increases during the summer as more people travel to rural areas for recreation and outdoor activities. Some travellers hunt marmots or consume their meat, exposing themselves to possible infection.

Several cases of bubonic plague, including fatalities, have been reported during the summer months in previous years.

According to the National Center for Zoonotic Diseases, areas in 17 of Mongolia’s 21 provinces are currently considered at risk of plague.

Bubonic plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and is commonly transmitted through the bites of infected fleas carried by wild rodents, including marmots. Infection may also occur through direct contact with infected animals or their tissues.

Common symptoms include sudden fever, headache, weakness and painful swelling of the lymph nodes, particularly in the neck, armpits or groin.

The World Health Organization says plague can be treated effectively with antibiotics when diagnosed at an early stage. However, without prompt treatment, the infection can develop into more severe forms and may become fatal within a short period.

Mongolian health authorities have advised the public not to hunt, transport, purchase or consume marmots. People have also been urged to avoid touching sick or dead wild animals and to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms after possible exposure.
