Three Major Russian Films of 2026: The Current Leader, the Audience Favourite and the Year’s Box-Office Champion

No single film can be described as the best Russian release of 2026 under every measure.
When current box-office performance, audience ratings and total commercial achievement are considered separately, Na Derevnyu Dedushke 2, Serf 3 and Cheburashka 2 stand out for different reasons.
Na Derevnyu Dedushke 2: The Current Box-Office Leader
The family comedy Na Derevnyu Dedushke 2 opened across Russia on July 16.
The 93-minute film has received an early Kinopoisk audience rating of 7.1.
The story follows Vladik as he again spends his summer holiday with his grandfather Yura. His paternal grandfather Viktor, a former diplomat, unexpectedly arrives in the village.
Viktor wins the boy’s attention with expensive gifts, stories of international travel and a confident manner.
A rivalry develops between the two grandfathers, but the comedy takes a more serious turn when a dangerous secret from Viktor’s past emerges.
Yuri Stoyanov and Fyodor Dobronravov play the rival grandfathers.
The cast also includes Yaroslav Golovnyov, Ingrid Olerinskaya, Tatyana Orlova and Anton Filipenko.
The film led the Russian box office during its July 16–19 opening weekend with 101.4 million rubles. Its total had reached 167.8 million rubles by July 23.
Its performance nevertheless requires context. The sequel’s first-week revenue was 21 percent below the comparable figure for the original film.
It is therefore the current market leader, but not yet an exceptional historical success.
The film’s main strengths are the comic competition between two experienced actors, its rural setting and its accessible treatment of family, truth and forgiveness.
Serf 3: Large-Scale Entertainment with a Strong Audience Rating
Directed by Klim Shipenko, Serf 3 was released on June 11 as the third film in one of Russia’s most popular comedy franchises.
It has a Kinopoisk rating of approximately 7.3 based on more than 30,000 audience votes.
The story follows Lena and Boris Vyazemsky, who are preparing to sell their family company, divorce and go their separate ways.
Their children, Milana and Yelisey, ask Grisha and his team to prevent the family from breaking apart.
The couple are placed inside an elaborate psychological reconstruction of the era of Peter the Great.
Sea journeys, historical fortresses and dangerous situations force them to reconsider their past and their responsibilities to one another.
The film’s official description presents the rediscovery of the importance of family as its central theme.
The cast includes Miloš Biković, Pavel Priluchny, Kristina Asmus, Ivan Okhlobystin, Aleksandr Samoylenko, Maria Mironova and Olga Dibtseva.
A major production block was filmed in Turkey, using Mamure Castle, open-water locations and a functioning three-masted sailing ship designed to resemble vessels built with technology from the era of Peter the Great.
The locations give the comedy a larger adventure-film scale.
By July 22, Serf 3 had earned more than 1.06 billion rubles in Russia and attracted around 2.21 million viewers.
The result remains well below the final totals of the first two films.
The original Serf earned approximately 3.18 billion rubles across Russia and the CIS, while the second film generated around 3.94 billion rubles.
Serf 3 should therefore not be described as the franchise’s biggest commercial success.
Its audience rating, ensemble cast, historical setting and large-scale adventure sequences nevertheless make it one of the year’s most prominent Russian commercial entertainments.
Cheburashka 2: Russia’s Biggest Film of the Year
Directed by Dmitry Dyachenko, Cheburashka 2 opened on January 1 as a family comedy adventure.
It earned 6.038 billion rubles during the first half of the year, making it the clear leader of Russia’s 2026 box office.
By February 21, its Russian box-office total had exceeded 6 billion rubles.
It became only the second Russian film to cross that level, behind the original Cheburashka released in 2023.
The story begins one year after the events of the first film.
Cheburashka has become accustomed to living with the gardener Gena but, like a growing child, begins demanding independence, making mistakes and challenging parental authority.
After disrupting Sonya’s birthday celebration, Cheburashka secretly escapes into the mountains with Sonya and Grisha.
While the children encounter dangerous adventures, Gena and the other adults search for them.
The story combines childhood independence, parental responsibility, family communication and an effort to protect Gena’s home.
Sergei Garmash plays Gena, while Olga Kuzmina provides Cheburashka’s voice.
Elena Yakovleva, Fyodor Dobronravov, Polina Maksimova, Sergei Lavygin, Dmitry Lysenkov and Aleksandr Lykov are among the principal cast members.
The film has a Kinopoisk rating of around 7.7 based on more than 240,000 votes.
Its rating is therefore drawn from a substantially larger audience sample than those of Serf 3 or Na Derevnyu Dedushke 2.
Critical reaction has not been unanimous.
Some reviewers praised its energy, family emotion and spectacle, while others criticised its crowded screenplay, exaggerated characters and uneven visual effects.
Final Assessment
Na Derevnyu Dedushke 2 is the current July box-office leader.
Serf 3 is a strong option for large-scale comedy, adventure and a favourable audience rating.
Cheburashka 2 is the year’s highest-grossing Russian release and has received the broadest audience response.
Based on commercial achievement and widespread audience acceptance, Cheburashka 2 is the strongest overall choice among the three.
For a leading Russian film still in active theatrical release, Na Derevnyu Dedushke 2 is the most relevant current option.
For viewers seeking historical settings, elaborate spectacle and mainstream comedy, Serf 3 remains a prominent alternative.
