Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has established itself as one of the most significant big-screen films of 2026 by combining commercial success, critical acclaim and innovative filmmaking technology in the American movie market.

According to the official synopsis carried by Rotten Tomatoes, Odysseus and his soldiers attempt to cross the Mediterranean and return home. During their journey, they confront storms, maritime dangers, human betrayal, deadly obstacles and mythical creatures.
The film does not present the journey merely as a sequence of adventures. It also explores the psychological burden carried by a man returning from war, the responsibilities of leadership, loyalty to family, temptation, power and the deeply human desire to return home.

Filmed Entirely with IMAX Cameras
One of the film’s most important technical achievements is that The Odyssey was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras.
According to NBCUniversal, it is the first narrative feature to be filmed completely using IMAX cameras. Nolan described the project as a long-standing ambition. The production team used the same large-format technology for both intimate human moments and vast battle and maritime sequences.
The film was shot at real locations in several countries. NBCUniversal said that scenes involving the Trojan Horse used large numbers of performers, soldiers and practical visual effects.
Rather than relying excessively on computer-generated imagery, the production used physical sets, natural marine environments, large groups of performers and practical effects. This approach gives the film the physical scale and texture of a traditional historical epic.
The film runs for two hours and 52 minutes. It received an R rating in the United States for violence and some language.
Nolan’s Biggest Global Opening
The Odyssey earned $124.5 million in the United States and Canada during its opening weekend. Its worldwide opening reached $264.1 million, according to Variety.
This marked the biggest global opening of Nolan’s directing career.
After the film exceeded initial projections, industry analysts said its performance demonstrated that audiences continue to show strong interest in original and literature-based epics designed specifically for the big screen.
IMAX and other premium large-format screenings made a significant contribution to the film’s revenue. Some viewers travelled long distances to see its special IMAX version, while many screenings sold out in advance.

As of July 25, the film held a 94 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 434 reviews. Its audience score stood at 97 percent based on more than 10,000 verified audience responses.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critical consensus said the film revives the ancient adventure through spectacular visual scale and strong performances from its large ensemble cast.
Audience reactions also described it as a technically impressive epic best experienced on the big screen.
Variety’s review praised the film’s sustained momentum, immense visual construction and Nolan’s handling of a complex narrative. Matt Damon’s performance as a weary, war-affected Odysseus determined to return home was also identified as one of the film’s major strengths.
