Prime Minister Shah Meets UN Secretary-General Guterres in New York

Prime Minister Balendra Shah met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at UN headquarters in New York on Thursday during the high-level week of the 81st session of the General Assembly.

Guterres expressed condolences for the loss of life and property in the Bhote Koshi disaster and said the United Nations stood with Nepal on climate issues. He praised the young members of the Nepali delegation and recalled visiting Nepal as a tourist in 1978. He also pledged to continue supporting Nepal after leaving office.

Shah thanked Guterres for his goodwill toward Nepal. Describing the scale of the damage caused by the Bhote Koshi disaster, he said the risk of glacial lake outburst floods remained high.

The two discussed resettling communities living along riverbanks, green reconstruction and support for extending the timeline for Nepal’s graduation from least developed country status.
