Xi Attends State Dinner Hosted by Trump at the White House

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, attended a state dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump and Melania Trump at the White House on Thursday evening. The two presidential couples met guests attending the event.

Speaking at the dinner, Xi extended Mid-Autumn Festival greetings to Americans who support the development of China–US relations. Recalling Trump’s visit to China in May, he said the two presidents’ reciprocal state visits within six months marked a notable moment in bilateral relations.

Xi said the leaders had reached a common understanding on a range of issues during his visit. This had provided further direction for what he described as a constructive relationship of strategic stability between China and the United States. He called on the two countries to manage competition and differences while finding new ways to cooperate.

Xi also referred to more than two centuries of trade between the two countries, cooperation between Chinese and American people during the Second World War, and the role of Ping-Pong Diplomacy in the normalisation of relations. People-to-people exchanges had strengthened bilateral ties, he said, urging China and the United States to act as responsible major countries.

Trump also delivered remarks at the dinner. The account released by Chinese news agency Xinhua did not provide details of his speech. American artists performed at the event.
