Namgyal Ling Monastery: Five-Colored Prayer Flags Amid Green Hills

Namgyal Ling Monastery, located in the mountainous area of Nyagchu County in Garzê Prefecture at an altitude of around 2,300 meters, is known as an inspiring center of natural beauty, religious practice, and environmental protection. Established in 1943, the monastery stands in a cold and windy highland region, yet its surroundings remain lush and green, as if nature itself has clothed the area in a robe of greenery.

At present, Namgyal Ling Monastery has six monks. They carry out their daily spiritual practice and meditation in their respective monastic quarters. In the main assembly hall, religious offerings, prayers, and practices are conducted according to a schedule, with duties rotated every three months. Currently, Tsering Samdrup has taken on this responsibility and performs offerings and religious practices in the main hall.

The nearby Nya Yul Zhab village is surrounded by dense forests. For the monks of Namgyal Ling Monastery, protecting the local mountains, rivers, and forests is not merely an environmental task; it is also regarded as a sacred tradition rooted in religious faith and the responsibility of safeguarding their own homeland. This noble tradition has been passed down from generation to generation.

Tsering Samdrup and other monks regularly patrol the mountainous areas during critical periods. They actively participate in forest fire prevention, risk monitoring, and the protection of local natural resources. Through these efforts, the monastery has become not only a religious site but also a shared center for community welfare, environmental care, and the protection of life.

In the soft glow of butter lamps, the mirror of time seems to shine clearly. The long history of Namgyal Ling Monastery lives on through the light of ever-burning lamps and the continuous sound of sacred conch shells. For Tsering Samdrup and his fellow monks, protecting the common home of all living beings is an important mission that brings peace, happiness, and well-being in this very life. With this spirit, they continue to shoulder the noble responsibility of serving both humanity and nature.
