Xi’s DPRK Visit Marks Important Milestone in China-DPRK Relations

Liu Haixing, minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, has said Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea marked an important milestone in the history of China-DPRK relations.

At the invitation of Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and president of the People’s Republic of China, paid a state visit to the DPRK from June 8 to 9, 2026.

After the conclusion of the visit, Liu briefed journalists on its significance and outcomes.

According to Liu, Xi’s visit was his first state visit to the DPRK in seven years and also his first overseas visit of the year. He said the visit once again created a “China moment” in global diplomacy.

Liu noted that the visit coincided with the 65th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between China and the DPRK. Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving global landscape and a complex international situation, the top leaders of the two countries added new contemporary meaning and strong momentum to the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK, he said.

During the visit, Xi and Kim held long and in-depth exchanges, Liu said. He noted that formal talks, friendly interactions, walks together and warm, family-like exchanges reflected the mutual trust and closeness between the two leaders.

The two leaders discussed the future development of China-DPRK relations, the socialist causes of both countries, and regional and international affairs. According to Liu, the talks resulted in a series of new and important consensuses.

Liu said China remains firmly committed to the correct path amid changing circumstances. In a turbulent international environment, he said, China and its partners are advancing together toward just causes.

He said the Chinese people have always stood on the right side of history and on the side of human civilization’s progress. China, he added, continues to uphold the banner of peace, development, cooperation and win-win outcomes.

According to Liu, China is willing to work with people of all countries to follow the trend of the times, understand the general course of history, jointly promote the building of a community with a shared future for humanity, and make greater contributions to peace and development for humankind.

The Chinese side concluded that Xi’s state visit to the DPRK has brought China-DPRK relations into a new historical stage and connected their traditional friendship with contemporary needs.
