Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi have expressed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordination while jointly addressing global challenges.
During their meeting in Turku, southwest Finland, on Sunday, President Stubb said Finland was willing to increase high-level exchanges with China and expand practical cooperation in emerging sectors, including the green economy and artificial intelligence. He also emphasized the need to deepen multilateral coordination and work with China to address shared global challenges.
Stubb conveyed his greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping through Wang and recalled his visit to China and meeting with the Chinese leader. He said China had made significant achievements in political development, economic growth, social stability, science and technology since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1950.
According to Stubb, China is providing important stability to the world at a time when the international situation has reached a critical turning point. He said the global initiatives proposed by President Xi offered a broad assessment of the current international environment and presented approaches for addressing common challenges.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, conveyed President Xi’s greetings to Stubb. He said Xi’s state visit to Finland in 2017, which marked the centenary of Finnish independence, had further strengthened the traditional friendship between the two countries.
Under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China and Finland should remain committed to their future-oriented new-type cooperative partnership, Wang said. He added that China was prepared to strengthen coordination, share development opportunities and jointly address emerging challenges with Finland.
Wang said the world was currently facing growing turbulence and uncertainty, together with an increasing risk that international relations could once again be dominated by power-based competition. Against this background, China would continue to serve as an important force for world peace, stability and development, he said.
During his visit to Finland, Wang also held talks with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen. According to Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, their discussions covered bilateral relations, China-European Union relations, international security, the situation in Ukraine, European security and developments in the Middle East.
Wang is visiting Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway from July 2 to 8. China has said the visit is intended to expand cooperation with the Nordic countries in green transition, trade, investment, science and technology, and multilateral affairs.
