China Opposes US Tariffs on 60 Trading Partners

China has opposed the United States’ new tariffs on 60 trading partners, saying unilateral tariff measures of any form are unacceptable.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a regular press briefing in Beijing on Friday that China’s position on economic and trade issues with the United States remained consistent and clear.

“China opposes unilateral tariff measures of any form. Tariff wars and trade wars are not in the interests of any party,” Lin said.

The United States has imposed new tariffs on goods imported from 60 trading partners, including China. Under the new arrangement, imports from China are subject to a 12.5 per cent tariff.

Asked whether China would introduce retaliatory measures, Lin said he had already made China’s position clear.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative said the tariffs were imposed because the trading partners had allegedly failed to enforce effective measures preventing imports of goods produced with forced labour.

China maintains that trade disputes should be resolved through dialogue and consultation based on equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit, rather than through unilateral pressure or tariff wars.
