Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will implement a Uniform Civil Code in Uttar Pradesh if it forms the government in the state for a third time.

Addressing the BJP’s state working committee meeting in Lucknow on Friday, Shah said the code had already been implemented in some Indian states. He said the BJP would introduce it in Uttar Pradesh if the party returned to power.

Shah travelled to Lucknow to discuss preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and the party’s organisational strategy. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, state party president Pankaj Chaudhary and other senior leaders attended the meeting.

In his address, Shah referred to the BJP’s past electoral performance in the state. He said that after strengthening the party organisation, the BJP won 73 seats with a 41 percent vote share in 2014. He also said the party secured 312 seats with about 40 percent of the vote in the 2017 Assembly election, despite demonetisation.

Asked by reporters to respond to Shah’s announcement, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav replied sarcastically: “You took a very long time to arrive, sir.”
