Zakharova Accuses West of Double Standards Over Countries Maintaining Ties with Russia

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has accused Western countries of pressuring and threatening some states for maintaining good relations with Moscow while applying different standards when their own allies engage in energy dialogue with Russia.

Speaking to TASS, Zakharova said Western governments criticize or pressure certain countries over trade and political relations with Russia, yet do not question similar engagement when it involves states aligned with the West.

She described such practices as increasingly resembling a “modern foreign-policy anecdote,” arguing that the inconsistency was both “funny and sad.”

According to Zakharova, the West lacks a common standard even on this issue and does not consistently apply the human-rights principles it frequently invokes in international affairs.

Her remarks reflect Moscow’s broader criticism that Western sanctions and economic pressure are applied selectively according to geopolitical interests.
