Xi’s India Visit Gives Fresh Momentum to BRICS, Global South and China-India Relations: Wang Yi

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India has injected fresh momentum into high-quality BRICS cooperation, strengthened unity among Global South countries and provided strategic guidance for the future development of China-India relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while briefing reporters on Xi’s participation in the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi on Saturday and Sunday.
According to Wang, Xi summarized the development of BRICS over the past two decades with three key phrases: self-reliance and self-strengthening, standing together through difficulties, and achieving fruitful results. At a new historical starting point, Xi called on BRICS countries to take the lead in innovation-driven development, safeguarding peace and stability, promoting mutual learning among civilizations, and reforming and improving global governance.
Wang said Xi also highlighted the importance of 2027, when BRICS will enter its fourth “China Year.” China plans to use the opportunity to build broader consensus, open new prospects for cooperation and help launch what Xi described as the third golden decade of BRICS development.
The visit also strengthened the collective role of the Global South, Wang said. Xi put forward four proposals aimed at enhancing cooperation among developing countries: defending the rule of law in international affairs, ensuring equal application of international law and rules, upholding multilateralism and the authority of the United Nations, maintaining a people-centered approach to development, and advancing security governance against both traditional and nontraditional threats.
On development and technology, Xi emphasized the importance of the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation. He proposed a series of BRICS initiatives covering AI-empowered new industrialization, open-source and inclusive artificial intelligence, digital industry cooperation and intelligent manufacturing.
Wang said these initiatives are intended to help developing countries gain broader access to emerging technologies, strengthen industrial capacity and participate more fully in the next phase of global economic transformation.
Xi’s visit also provided strategic guidance for China-India relations, Wang said. Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held what he described as candid and in-depth discussions on strategic, long-term and directional issues concerning bilateral ties.
According to Wang, the most important consensus reached by the two leaders was that China and India should see each other as partners. Xi said the two countries could draw on each other’s strengths, support one another, help each other succeed and pursue common development.
The two leaders also agreed to jointly maintain peace and tranquility in border areas. China and India further agreed to support each other as they take turns holding the rotating BRICS chairmanship.
Wang said Xi’s New Delhi visit connected three major strategic themes: the future direction of BRICS, the collective rise of the Global South and the long-term development of China-India relations.
China, he said, will continue working to strengthen BRICS as an effective platform for multilateral cooperation while expanding the representation, technological opportunities and role of developing countries in global governance.
