Lavrov Meets UN Secretary-General Candidate Olara Otunnu

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a meeting on September 14 with Olara Otunnu of Uganda, a candidate for the post of United Nations Secretary-General.

During the meeting, Otunnu presented his election platform and outlined his priorities for the leadership of the United Nations. Lavrov, in turn, set out Russia’s expectations and requirements for candidates seeking the highest post in the UN Secretariat.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to the central coordinating role of the United Nations in world affairs. They also emphasized the importance of strengthening the UN as an effective and impartial institution for addressing global challenges, maintaining international peace and security, and advancing multilateral cooperation.

The meeting also highlighted the growing diplomatic engagement between candidates for the next UN Secretary-General and major member states as the selection process for the organization’s future leadership moves forward.
