EU Takes Firm Stance on U.S. Remarks on Greenland: Commitment to Defending Sovereignty and Borders Will Continue

Brussels — Responding on Monday to recent remarks by the U.S. President regarding Greenland, European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper stated that the European Union (EU) will continue to uphold the fundamental principles of national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law.

Speaking at the European Commission’s regular press briefing, Hipper said, “We have already made our position clear. Let me reiterate it once again—the European Union will continue to defend national sovereignty, territorial integrity, the inviolability of borders, and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.”

Emphasizing that these principles are universal, she added, “We will never hesitate to stand up for these values.”

Hipper also recalled a post made on December 22, 2025, on the social media platform X by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. The post reaffirmed the EU’s solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, noting that Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and that any change in its status must be decided by the people of Greenland and Denmark themselves.

Meanwhile, in remarks made on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Greenland is “necessary for the defense” of the United States. He also suggested that Venezuela may not be the last country to face U.S. intervention, sparking international concern and criticism.

The EU’s latest position is being viewed as an effort to reaffirm its commitment to international law and the principles of sovereignty amid rising global geopolitical tensions.
